I like a 20 yard shot it is far enough away to give a better chance at
both lungs.Close shots from a tree stand can gut you in trouble if you
have not practiced over head close shots. The angle can be very great
and make it hard to get both lungs. If you are ground level you will need
to aim low (depending on how you set your pins)My first year I took a
buck at 40 yards (measured with tape) but it was in a mowing lot hill
side the same height as me in my tree stand.I would not try that shot
today.I set my pin at 20 and 30 yards and have no markings for any
    further than that.JMO

20 yards. Not because I can't hit 30, but I like them close. It's one reason that I went to a recurve, all my shots were within 20 yards anyway (avg 11), except for two at 24/25.

I voted 40 yards. I know my shot well with a compound out to 40 and can shoot further, but would limit hunting to 40. The recurve is limited to 30.

I will shoot out to 40 yrds on a deer. I can regularlly group 80% of my arrows at 60yrds in a 8" diameter. I regularlly practice shots at 40, 50 and 60. Because of that practice a 20 yard shot is so easy that I barely practice. even 40 yard shots have become easy. But to be honest there are so few places that I even have a shooting lane out to 40yards that it most likely doesn't matter. I prefer them between 20 and 30.

When I was shooting a compound bow I didn't shoot over thirty yards. Once I had a deer in the woods at forty yards. It was wide open so I took the shot. Put forty yard pin just behind the shoulder about halfway up. Arrow hit exactly where I was aiming. Some time later I ranged it with a laser range finder. It was fifty yards exactly. I don't know how I ever hit . I guess I made a good bad shot.

It really depends on how ansey the animal is.
I would shoot out to 50-ish yrds at a still, non-nervous deer.
30 yrds at a deer walking slow even pace.
Even 20 yrds is pushing it if the deer is real spooky or if it is walking fast.

I voted for 50 yards, only in an open field. Wouldn't recommend it in the woods. My farthest kill was 53 yards in a field. You have got to be confident and know your gear really well for those shots.

I would say that 40 yards is my maximum but there are a lot of "qualifiers" I put on a shot out that far so it is a very rare occurance that I even consider it. A lot can happen in the time it takes an arrow to cover 40 yards.

Most of my shots are in the 20 yard mark.

just wondering who feels comfortable shooting out to 70 yrds on a deer? I might need to take some lessons on your shooting form!
