12/2 - Swamp Boys Hit The Shore

Well, with the lack of ducks in our usual spots and swamps this past Saturday, a bunch of backwoods swamp hunters from the hills went south and hit the saltwater. Myself, Bishop and DU CT loaded up the trucks with kayaks, gear and decoys in the morning and made it to the shore around 10:30 am. We make this trip once or twice a season and it was great to have Bishop on the crew again. Unscouted, we weren't sure what to expect - a departure from how when normally approach our hunts but the chance to see some divers and species we don't get up in the hills was enough to keep me excited.

After a short paddle to the spot we set out 18 canada dekes, 12 mallards, 6 black ducks a motion decoy. The wind was dead calm and the water looked like glass. The motion deke was definitely going to be an important factor this time around. Too bad our second motion decoy broke when we set it out. Oh well. We had also brought a longline of 18 blue bill decoys and a layout boat that we planned to take turns in but an unknown hole in the layout boat nearly sunk it so that didn't happen. Add to the problems a forgotten paddle, we had to tow DU CT in, and our day wasn't off to the smartest of starts.

Right as we got tucked into place after setting up a pair of bufflehead came zipping low over the water. Had we seen them a split second sooner we could have taken a shot. Shortly after that the mallards began to zip around. We dropped three from two pairs that came in about five minutes apart. Bishop paddled out to retrieve the mallards and right then a trio of lesser scaup gave us a solid look and we were able to fold over a single from the three. We had consistent birds moving all over the place. A lot of them already had their location picked out and didn't pay any mind to our set up but we were getting shots in often enough to keep us constantly on alert. Dropped a few mallards. Missed a few chip shots but we were all having a blast.

A couple hours into the hunt the black ducks and hybrids really started moving around. They kept piling in just to our north but a couple pairs gave us a look and we dropped three. Witnessed Bishop make an awesome shot on a black duck that was flying by with the afterburners on. The smile on his face after recovering that ducks was priceless. Things got a little slow after that. Bishop then paddled across the way to spread out a bit and he was able to drop a mallard from a group of three after a while. That was awesome to watch from a few hundred yards away. With an hour left to go a pair of brant swung in and caught us all by surprise. They sure make an awesome call. And the pair of buffies snuck through again.

Before long it was legal light off. As we dealt with glue-like mud at low tide while picking up, groups of brant 50 to 75 birds strong started piling on top of us. They couldn't figure out what they wanted to do so they kept circling around us. That was pretty awesome to hear a couple hundred brant all calling out at the same time. We ended the day with seven mallards, three black ducks and a lesser blue bill in the bag and put eyes on a handful of species we never see up in the northwest corner of the state. Everyone left with a grin and fresh meat for the freezer. We never did have any Canadas come by, rare given the history of this spot and odd seeing as we saw 100 geese or so leaving as we were paddling in, but that's all part of the hunt!

Great write up and what an awesome time we had. You guys should create a workout video called low tide wader walking. That sticky muck gets everywhere. Iím enjoying a mallard as we speak.
