    11/17 - Honks & Hens

Made it out this mornig with DU CT in the AFRP goose zone so we could get on some geese. AP unit is closed still. We were out of our territory and we don't know of many spots down there but did some scouting earlier this week and found a legal spot with mallards, black ducks and honkers. Had the spot scouted a handful of times before and after work so we felt confident we could work some of the birds. Legal light came on and we could hear geese honking down at the other end of the swamp. A couple minutes later a group of 8 mallards surprised us from our 6 o'clock. Hammered on the call and they gave us a look and a quarter turn but decided to dump into the back side. About 30 minutes went by with geese paddling around but none of them wanted to move much. Finally a group of about 30 geese appeared over the tree line with cupped wings and a spot to land already in their sights. They gave us a perfect pass and we dropped 5. The swamp came alive and the geese in the back all flew out. The 8 mallards must have joined up with another group that we didn't know was there. They picked up into the wind then turned hard towards us. Two hens from the group peeled over to our decoys and the rest flared a bit too far out of range. We dropped the two. It ended up being a great morning with 7 birds down at a spot we've never hunted before. The geese are definitely mature adult birds. Large bodies. One banded. Perfect fowling weather . Cold and windy. This is the best time of year for sure.

Great job guys. We were in the ap unit this morning and literally did not see a single duck after thinking the wind would be great. We saw a ton of honkers, had a bunch Work our spread and even had a pair land right inside our duck spread,no calling no goose decoys. For some reason they tend to play games with me when the season is closed.
