Best way to remove rust from a gun

Last night I picked up an old LC Smith SxS that belonged to my great-great grandfather. Unfortunately, the gun has not been stored properly for some time, and it has built up a fair bit of surface rust. What is the best way to get rid of the rust without damaging the gun?

Either there's no picture or my browser won't load it. So I can't tell how rusty the outside is. I strongly suggest you bring the gun to a shop and have someone scope it out. You don't know how corroded the inside is and if it's all pitted inside that is a recipe for disaster.

For light surface rust, try WD40 + 000 steel wool.

If you can find it, G96 is the best stuff for cleaning guns. It will take off the rust without ruining whatever is left of the original finish.
