The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife's fall trout stocking program continues to grow in popularity each year. Approximately 20,000 trout averaging 14 to 16 inches and weighing 1 - 2 pounds and 1,000 exceptionally large broodstock trout, measuring 17 - 24 inches, and weighing 3 - 8 pounds, are distributed in 16 streams and 16 lakes and ponds statewide in October.

A 2009 survey of New Jersey trout anglers revealed that 67% were not aware of the fall trout stocking change made in 2006 where all the trout stocked measure 14 inches to 24 inches. That same survey showed that only 11% of our trout anglers keep all the trout they catch. Since fewer trout anglers fish in the fall and catch and release is a growing trend and many of these super-sized trout are not easily caught, many of them remain in our streams and lakes for anglers to catch throughout the winter and even into the spring season. If you haven't been trout fishing yet this year or this fall, it's not too late to get into the big trout bonanza that will last for many weeks to come.

Film crews from two NJ media outlets accompanied trucks from the Pequest Trout Hatchery on two stocking runs this year. Their videos are now available online at the following locations:
