I'm going to give it a try on Tuesday morning in a cut field along RT 85 for some early season geese. If nothing else I'll be trying out my new layout blind and Benelli I bought last week.

Well being it was very clear out and with the sun heating things up fast I didn't expect too much this morning. I was set up by 6 AM and the only thing I was hearing was cars and trucks on the road behind me and crows carrying on to my right. About 6:40 I hear one honk and give one honk back then the flock starts calling to my decoys and I call back with a come on down call. They give one pass over the dekes about 40 yards up and circle around and set their wings, about 15 birds, with the lead birds feet just off the ground I pop out of my blind and put a bead on a bird and drop it with my first shot. My two follow up shots put another bird down but it's on the run and I make a beeline for it and chase it for a 100 yards before it decides to hide, I get a foot on its neck and put it down. I hear two shots off in the distance and get back into my blind, but nothing else flys by. With the temp rising I consider myself lucky and pack up to head home, as soon as I get in my truck my phone is ringing and my wife tells be there is 13 turkeys feeding in a small grass lot just down the road from our house, I hope they stay in the area, it's been years since I killed a fall turkey.geese 9-2-08 002.jpg[/attachment:2oux8nxt]geese 9-2-08 003.jpg[/attachment:2oux8nxt]

I know the blind sticks out in the green grass but the geese didn't seem to mind.geese 9-2-08 005.jpg[/attachment:2jatfj48]geese 9-2-08 006.jpg[/attachment:2jatfj48]

Well I screwed up this morning twice, no make that three times. I left late being I "KNEW" nobody else will be out, boy was I wrong, all the cut corn fields were taken. I was going to say the hell with it but figured I'ld set up in a grass field down the road with a small lake near by, I heard shots to my right and saw birds 100 yards or more in the air and these guys were shooting at them. About a half hour later I hear shooting again and a dozen geese are flying my way, I double cluck at them and invite them down and they circle around and fly over the hill. A minute goes by and here they come again and I start calling and as I am I hear another call from my left, the flock comes around tight and sets their wings and come over me at 20 yards, as I rise to shoot something catches my head and yanks my hat off. Within those few seconds the flock landed about 100 yards away and I hear a honk and look to see a goose walking through my decoys, where it came from I have no idea but he pulled those other geese right over to about 50 yards and I get excited. All of a sudden the geese see something they don't like and are getting ready to fly, of course away from me, today is a day I should have bought my Ithaca 10 gauge. I drove by all the cut corn fields in the area and saw very few geese in them, but I seen 100's sitting in open grass fields on the way home.
Great report and some really nice pictures :drink:
I never tryed hunting geese always to busy with the deer mayb some day i will try it.
