Well I ventured out tonight, and saw some movement about 4:40pm, it was about 40yds away, but didn't come near me...I sat there thinking that it was going to be a wasted evening, when I glanced to my right and saw movement, it was about 6:27pm!! I saw that it was a buck, but couldn't tell how big it was..he was behind some limbs...he slowly started up the rise, and I raised my bow, began to draw, picked a spot, and released...the buck did a mule kick, and sped up the rise, and then cut away from me...I knew I had a good hit on it..but never heard him crash.

I got down immediately, due to the rain as I was concerned about the rain washing away my blood trail...I found my arrow, it was covered from broadhead to fletching...I knew this deer was dead.

Just to get a second set of eyes, I called my buddy, and he came...and we started off following the path the deer took, there was very little blood to be found the rain began falling harder...we split up, and after about 5 mins I hear him let out a woo hoo, he found him!

I walk up on my biggest bow kill to date...a very nice state land 10pt. that dressed out at 165lbs.

Van, Congrats. Nice animal. Love the chocolate horns.
See, Buddy...I'm not bad luck after all. If it wasn't for my bad Karma that you brought into the woods the other day, you would've arrowed that dink, had meat in the freezer, and not gone out in the rain yesterday. Yup, this kill is allll meee!! :icon_e_smile: Good job.

Thanks for the well wishes...here's a shot of the entry wound...now you know why I love these Magnus Buzzcuts!!

I shot this deer in the heart, and it still went some 50-60 yds after the shot.

I was aiming low, like your supposed to, anticipating the buck dropping, but he never knew what hit him!!

Super. Hardcore in the rain I am always afraid I won't be able to recover an animal without a good trail. Once they drop you almost need to trip over them if they are in any cover at all.

hey van did you ever have any trail cam pics of this buck?

Here are pics of 2 more bucks from that same area that I got the 10 pt on...I'm not sure if the second buck is my 10 pt or not, the pic is blurry! Regardless, there are some more reasons to hunt there! ;)

Nice job Van!! How long have you been hunting to get a buck like that?

Jeremy, I've been hunting all my life, but I've only been bowhunting since 2002/3...I do a lot of reading, and watching of shows to try to pick up and learn as much as I can, I also spend a lot of time in the woods...ask my wife, of course she'll tell you I spend to much time, and that I'm obsessed...but I think that may explain what it takes to be as blessed as I have been with my hunts!

For me, while it was nice to score such a nice deer, I would of been just as pleased if it were a nice fat doe! I'm not a trophy hunter, but if I happen to get one along the way it's a bonus. I don't get consumed with hunting only 1 or 2 deer, at that point I don't believe that it is enjoyable anymore....it's about being in the woods, and taking in the hunt, and just being a part of what God created...it's really him who should get the glory, as I am just a vessel, it's by his hand that I was able to get that deer!

I agree, Doe , Buck it doesnt matter if it's brought to my stand for me, I am a happy man.
BUt, I have add that the Trophy part, I think if you can locate a mature Buck and pattern him to where you know him well. If your sites are set on that Buck and you succede in taking him, that just hightens the gradification of all the hard work you have put in!

That is a really nice buck, congrats. Pachaug has some nice deer, it's been 15 years since I have hunted there, back when I lived in Sterling . I have been hunting Natchaug since and have done fairly well there.
